US confirms that Russian hackers penetrated election system in 2016

The hacker attacks were spotted in 21 states and Russia successfully got the access to some of the lists

Jeanette Manfra, the Head for Cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the Russian hackers penetrated the U.S. election system in 2016 as NBC News reported.

'We were able to determine that the scanning and probing of voter registration databases were coming from the Russian government', she said.

Manfra specified that the hacker attacks were spotted in 21 states and Russia successfully got the access to some of the lists.

'2016 was a wake-up call and now it is incumbent upon states and the federations to do something about it before our democracy is attacked again', Manfra said, adding that many countries took seriously the cyberattacks of Russia after the 2016 election and began to significantly improve their security systems.

Earlier Mike Pompeo, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) claimed that Russia can interfere in the mid-term election to the US Congress in November 2018.
