US draft federal budget for 2018 fiscal year includes assistance for Ukraine in terms of various program totaling about $350 million, including the possibility of lethal weapons’ provision for defense. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine.
According to the published budgetary request, the general amount of funds for 2018 fiscal year within the assistance program for Ukraine through State Department and USAID amounts to almost $204 million. These funds are envisaged for realization of health care initiatives, support of economic growth and assistance toward implementation of structural reforms in Ukraine.
Separately, $150 million assistance should be allocated through US Defense Department and would be directed at defense and security sphere. According to budgetary request, the aid is requested to be sent for training, equipment and consultation of Ukrainian military, as well as strengthening potential of Ukraine for the protection of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Beyond that, this is also about provision of military hardware and equipment, other military supplies and services, logistics, intelligence support for Ukrainian Armed Forces and security forces. The document also includes the possibility of providing defensive lethal weapons, which was excluded in the previous US budgets.
