The US presidential administration began the development of restrictive measures against Iraq in response to the decision of the country's parliament on the withdrawal of US troops. It is reported by the Washington Post with reference to three US officials.
According to the interlocutors of the newspaper, the US Department of the Treasury and the White House will play a leading role in the implementation of sanctions. Sources also emphasize that there is no final decision regarding the imposition of these measures.

One official said that the United States intends to “wait at least wait a bit” in order to check whether Iraq will fulfill its threat of expelling US troops from the country.

The article notes that the imposition of sanctions against Iraq will affect the United States, as during the 17 years of the war between the countries established close ties. It is also emphasized that thousands of American soldiers died during the Iraq war, for which Washington spent more than $ 1 trillion.

January 5 Iraqi parliament voted in favor of a resolution providing for the cancellation of the agreement with the US-led international coalition. Most of the approximately 180 legislators present in parliament voted in favor of the bill.

January 6, the US-led international coalition against ISIS announced its readiness to leave Iraq within a few weeks. It is reported by Reuters.

It was not immediately clear if all roughly 5,000 U.S. troops would leave Iraq.

Several helicopters could be heard flying over Baghdad on Monday night. It was not immediately clear if this was a related development. The letter said coalition forces would be using helicopters to evacuate.

“In deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, the coalition will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement,” reads the letter.
