The U.S. government said this country abandons membership in this organization and intends to create the observing mission there.
According to The Washington Post, ‘the U.S. is pulling out of UNESCO because of what Washington sees as its anti-Israel bias and need for “fundamental reform” of the U.N. cultural agency’.
‘The State Department said it notified UNESCO director Irina Bokova on Thursday of the decision. The U.S. will seek to have a “permanent observer” status instead,’ the outlet wrote.
The withdrawal will take effect December 31, 2018.
According to AFP, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova expressed regret about this decision.
