The United States abandons UNESCO; the respective statement has been released by the Department of the State on Thursday.

The U.S. government said this country abandons membership in this organization and intends to create the observing mission there.

According to The Washington Post, ‘the U.S. is pulling out of UNESCO because of what Washington sees as its anti-Israel bias and need for “fundamental reform” of the U.N. cultural agency’.

‘The State Department said it notified UNESCO director Irina Bokova on Thursday of the decision. The U.S. will seek to have a “permanent observer” status instead,’ the outlet wrote.

The withdrawal will take effect December 31, 2018.

According to AFP, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova expressed regret about this decision.

'While the U.S. stopped funding UNESCO after it voted to include Palestine as a member in 2011, the State Department has maintained a UNESCO office at its Paris headquarters and sought to weigh in on policy behind the scenes', Washington Post wrote commenting on the reasons why the U.S. left UNESCO.
