The United Nations initiate talks on the absolute ban of use of nuclear weaponry. According to DW, the disarmament and international security committee approved the respective resolution at the session in New York late on Thursday.
The leading nuclear-armed nations – the U.S., Russia, the UK and France – opposed the resolution. China abstained.
The resolution calls for convening a conference in March 2017 to negotiate a "legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination".
The first consultations are slated for March and June 2017 – even despite the opposition by the large nuclear states.
