The UN Security Council conveys an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Venezuela, Reuters reports.

As noted, Russia was unable to stop the meeting, which was initiated by the United States after Washington recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as president of Venezuela and urged Nicolas Maduro to resign.

9 of 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor of putting “The situation in Venezuela” topic on the provisional agenda, two abstained and four were against.

Earlier, France, Spain and Germany issued an ultimatum to the head of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro: either he announces new elections in the country within 8 days, or they recognize Juan Guaido the new president of Venezuela.

We recall, on Wednesday, January 23, the opposition leader and the head of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Juan Guaido, at a mass protest rally declared himself interim president of Venezuela and took the oath before thousands of opposition supporters.

He decided to do this on the day when mass protests against the head of state Nicolas Maduro were held in Caracas and in other cities of the Latin American country. People are angry that this week in Caracas, the security forces used force to disperse the demonstrators.

The change of power in Venezuela was also supported by the U.S., Canada, the European Union, and a number of South American countries: Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.

The presidents of Mexico and Bolivia refused to recognize the “coup”.

Venezuela has been undergoing a severe economic crisis for several years. Oil production collapsed one and a half times, prices are growing at a frantic pace, and the national currency, the bolivar, continues to depreciate rapidly.
