UN Security Council approves reform on peacekeeping operations

The budget of the UN peacekeeping missions for 2017-2018 amounts to 6.8 billion dollars

The UN Security Council approved the reform of the mechanism of the peacekeeping operations on September 20. The resolution was supported by all 15 countries of the Security Council as the website of the UN reported.

According to the resolution, the peacekeeping operation should take place more properly, transparently and efficiently.

The document also provides more active participation of the African Union in such missions to achieve high efficiency and results rating.  At the moment the UN blue helmets are mostly deployed in Africa or the Middle East.

The budget of the UN peacekeeping missions for 2017-2018 amounts to 6.8 billion dollars. The resolution adopted by the UN Security Council provides the partial financing of the operations of the African Union from the UN contributions.

Earlier, Vice President of the US Mike Pence claimed that UN is in need of reforming for more efficient resolution of the conflicts: the peacekeepers are not enough to provide the peace, the decisive actions are needed’. The necessity of the reforming of the UN was emphasized by the majority of the speakers, including Prime Minister of the UK Theresa May.
