4.4 thousand of humanitarian officials became victims in conflict zones for the past 20 years. Reads the statement of High Representative of the UN, Vice-Chairman of the European Commission Federica Mogherini and Member of European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianide in the run-up to the World Humanitarian Aid Day.
According to the statement, civilians most often become the victims of conflicts, along with this the attacks on the humanitarian officials are continuing.
'For the last twenty years, 4 400 humanitarian officials became the victims of large-scale violent acts. More than the half of them were murdered,' reads the message.
At the same time, the UN recalled that the International Humanitarian Right obligates all sides of conflicts to provide security for humanitarian officials, and unimplemented and continuing access to people who need humanitarian aid.
Earlier, UNICEF claimed that the mined territory in Donbas threatens the lives of 220 thousand children living nearby the areas contaminated with explosive remnants.
