The UN called on the European Union and Belarus to immediately find a solution for migrants stranded on the Polish-Belarusian border. This is reported by DW.

"If basic human rights are not protected, human lives will be in jeopardy. It is unacceptable that people die and the lives of others are threatened. They are hostages of a political stalemate that must be resolved immediately," said UN High Commissioner for Europe, Regional Director Refugee Office (UNHCR) Pascal Moreau.

The UNHCR statement underlines that asylum seekers and migrants have been trapped at the border for weeks in ever-worsening conditions and the approaching winter will only exacerbate the situation.

Moreau pointed out that the forcible displacement of migrants, as a result of which they are deprived of "access to territory and asylum", violates human rights. She urged Poland and Belarus, as signatories to the 1951 Geneva Convention on Refugees, "to fulfill their obligations and ensure that asylum seekers at their borders have access to asylum."

Earlier it was reported that the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border will last longer than several months.
