Today, November 1, Ukrainians recall the events of 1917-1922, when the-then nationalist parties struggled for Ukraine’s statehood and independence from foreign aggressors like Russian Bolsheviks. Presaident Petro Poroshenko congratulated fellow Ukrainians on the solemn date, describing the proclaiming of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic as another crucial stage in the struggle for the national unity and statehood in the 20th century.

‘The national unity, paid with blood of millions of patriots, and the independence that Ukrainian warriors are now protecting from the aggressor…these are our sacred achievements,’ the President said.

The head of the state wished Ukrainians peace and happiness in the victorious, united and prosperous country.

The Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (November 1918 – January 1919) was a self-proclaimed state, which later joined the Ukrainian People’s Republic, the predecessor of the modern Ukrainian state.
