Ukrainian scientists, artists and athletes turned to Patriarch of Constantinople, asking him to suspend his visit in Ukraine for a more suitable time in order not to allow the new schism in Ukraine's church. The full text is as follows.

On August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada, the top legislative authority of the Ukrainian state passed historical document, the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. Since then, it is a holiday for every Ukrainian family, for every concious citizen. You are among those invited to this holiday.

You know the history of Ukraine's statehood well, because it boasts strong ties with the history of Ukrainian Orthodoxy, the Orthodoxy of Holy Rus'.

One of your decisions was an official public refusal to support the schism that occurred in the Ukrainian Orthodoxy immediately after the declaration of independence of Ukraine. This schism was and, infortunately, still is a deep wound of every conscious Christian and millions of citizens of Ukraine.

On January 6, 2019, your balanced and historically justified official position has changed; you put your signature under Tomos, which aimed to grant autocephaly for Ukrainian Othrodox believers but actually caused the captivity of Orthodox shrines by representatives of radical organizations, unpunished beating of churchmen and worshippers. Most of these cases are observed on the level of UN, OSCE and other international organizations. Your All-Holiness is well aware of that, but you never condemned any of these cases or this hideous tendency in general. It is time to do it, because de jure you took personal commitment for cuiring the schism in the Ukrainian Orthodoxy that de facto could not be cured. On the contrary, it led to civilian conflicts.

You are also well aware of historical consequences and risks of this failed operation - to put it mildly. With great regret, we are forced to come to conclusion that granting Tomos occurred without the position, against the will of Ukraine's Orthodox Church, which is quite autonomous, and it is the only Ukrainian church recognized by all Orthodox Churches of the world. Most of these do not hurry to recognize the Orthodox Church of Ukraine that was organized at your blessing. Most of the monasteries of Athos are not in a hurry, either; and we keep visiting Athos in your canonical jurisdiction.

Quite regrettably, we should state that none of the official representatives of Ukraine's Orthodox Church will participate in the solemn events timed to Ukraine's Independence Day, where we expect to host Your All-Holiness. Maybe you should reconsider your plans. First, according to Constitution of Ukraine, religious organizations in our country are separated from the government authorities; second, we have quite grounded reasons to expect that Your visit could cause the sharpening of religious situation. Even given the fact of your peaceful intentions, which we have no reasons to doubt. Isn't it the time for you to stop on the path of aggravation of church opposition in Ukraine and the world, and delay your visit to a more suitable time - until the Congregational solution to all issues is made by the entirety of the world's Orthodoxy?

We're confident about your positive answer and wisdom of Your All-Holiness.
