On Tuesday, July 23, the Russian Federal Security Service completed an investigation in the case of 24 Ukrainian sailors detained near the Kerch Strait last November. Lawyer Nikolai Polozov who coordinates the defense of Ukrainian prisoners of war posted that on Facebook.

"Yesterday, the FSB investigation ended the procedure for notifying prisoners of war and their lawyers about the end of the preliminary investigation according to the article 215 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Since yesterday, we proceeded to the next stage - familiarization with the materials of the criminal case according to the article 217 Code of Criminal Procedure," Polozov wrote.

According to the lawyer, the sailors have already begun to get acquainted with the documents of the criminal case.

“Given the number of seamen and the volume of the criminal case, this stage can take 2-3 months. After that, the investigation will constitute the indictment, which will first be sent to the prosecutor, and after approved, to the court,” added Polozov.

As we reported earlier, on November 25, 2018, Russian border guards seized the Ukrainian Yana Kapu raid tug and small armored artillery boats Berdyansk and Nikopol of the Naval Forces of Ukraine in the Kerch Strait area, using weapons. As a result of the incident, 24 Ukrainian sailors were detained and arrested. They were transported from Crimea to the Moscow Lefortovo detention facility. In addition, three Ukrainian sailors wounded during the shelling by the Russians were transferred to the Prison Hospital.

July 9 in Russia, the final accusation against all 24 Ukrainian prisoners of seamen was brought.

Recently, the press secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, said that the Kremlin is not negotiating the release of Ukrainian sailors.
