The Ukrainian Parliament supported the draft decree No 5382, which requests that the Cabinet of Ministers keep the discounts for power consumption for the residents of the 30-kilometer zones around nuclear power plants.
311 MPs upheld the document, with 226 necessary to pass.
"Under the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers from December 28, 2020, the government set the fixed prices for power for consumers without considering the right of popluation living in the 30-kilometer zone of nuclear power plants (NPPs) - the right for a discount for consumed electricity. Thus, the tariff for electricity for residents of 30-kilometer zones around NPPs grew by 2.67 times", reads the explanatory note.
MPs reminded the government that the increase of power tariffs for residents of these areas contradicts Article 12 of the Law of Ukraine on the use of nuclear energy and radiation safety.
The document filed by the Parliament offers the Cabinet to keep these discounts for civilians residing in these areas. Earlier, anoter decree of the government allowed that kind of discount (30 percent off) in 2012, but it expired in January 2021.
