Members of the Ukrainian parliament honored the act of valor of the 'cyborgs', the collective figurative noun for Ukrainian defenders of Donetsk airport. The short ceremony took place at the session hall of the Ukrainian Parliament Wednesday.
'January 16 is unofficially considered the Day of Ukrainian cyborgs. It was in these winter days of 2015 when the fierce bloody fights took place at Donetsk airport. The Russian occupants attacked the defenders of Donetsk airport hundreds of times. The concrete could not take it and the metal melted, but our Ukrainian defenders still stood. Our fighters held Donetsk airport and did not surrender it to the occupant. Back then, in January 2015, it was very symbolic', said Parliament's Speaker Andriy Parubiy.
The MPs applauded the Ukrainian cyborgs while standing.
The battle for Donetsk airport began in May 2014 and lasted until January 2015. The Ukrainian military - the army, the National Guard, the Security Service, military volunteers - courageously held their positions for 242 consecutive days, enduring the deadly attacks of pro-Kremlin militants and regular Russian troops. Some of the Russian troops, surprised by the fortitude of the Ukrainian fighters called them 'cyborgs'.
