We recall that the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant occurred on April 26, 1986 at 01:23:47 during the test of the turbine generator No. 8 at the 4th power unit, which completely destroyed the reactor. The building of the power unit, the roof of the engine room partially collapsed. There were more than 30 fires, the main of them were suppressed an hour later, and by 05:00 on April 26, the fire was eliminated.

The radioactive cloud covered the European part of the USSR, most of Europe, the eastern part of the United States. Approximately 60% of radioactive substances settled in the territory of Belarus.

About 200 thousand people were evacuated from the affected area. The situation was complicated by the fact that the Soviet leadership had been silent about the fact of the disaster for a long time, and on May 1, people, knowing nothing, went to the May rally. According to the "Union Chernobyl" organization, out of 600 000 liquidators, 10% died, and another 165 000 became disabled.
