On December 17, Ukrainian director Yevgen Lavrenchuk was detained in Italy at Russia's request for his extradition to the Russian Federation. This was reported in the Free Eugene Lavrenchuk Facebook group.
"I want to inform all friends and acquaintances that since December 17, 2021, Yevgen Viktorovych Lavrenchuk has been held in an Italian pre-trial detention center in connection with Russia's request for his extradition to the Russian Federation," wrote the curator of the group, Marianna Gudich-Paliy.
Oleh Nikolenko, speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, said that the Consulate General of Ukraine in Naples provides consular assistance to Lavrenchuk.
"The court of Naples chose a preventive measure for him in the form of detention pending consideration of the Russian extradition request. With the assistance of the consulate general, the citizen was provided with a lawyer," Nikolenko said.
Now the consuls and the lawyer are interacting with Italian law enforcement officers to find out all the reasons for the detention of Lavrenchuk and to protect his legitimate interests.
Yevhen Lavrenchuk is a Ukrainian theater director, ex-chief director of the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theater, rector of the First Ukrainian School of Theater and Cinema.
