In case the Ukrainian government imposes protection measures against sulphuric acid suppliers from Russia and Belarus, the domestic producers are ready to provide the domestic market with the necessary amounts of the substance.
According to Oleksiy Holubov, the president of the Union of Chemistry Workers of Ukraine, the Ministry of Economic Development of Ukraine is supposed to consider such protection measures, aimed to defend the market from import supplies of goods from Russian and Belarusian producers.
'The halt in the work of metal factories, the fall of domestic currency, the trade war with the EU and other fears that the metallurgy industry workers try to feed the society - all of these are nothing but a PR move. This has nothing to do with the reality,' he said.
Ukraine's major producers informed the Ministry that their gross production capacity allows producing 1.123 million tons of acid, with the annual market demand on the level of 150,000 tons. Besides, the producers claim that there are enough transport vehicles in the motor pool to deliver 300,000 tons of acid per year.
Previously, the Union of Chemistry Workers complained that Ukraine's several major chemical industry producers take huge economic damage and may eventually shut down because of the considerably lowered prices for their products, as well as due to the growing imports of sulphuric acid from Russia and Belarus.
