The UN predicts that the population of Ukraine by 2050 may decline to 35 million. This is stated in the "Demographic Processes" UN analytical report.

"Ukraine's population is shrinking at one of the fastest growing rates in the world, and likely will decrease to 35 million by 2050. Low fertility rate, high mortality rate and the constant increase in the level of external migration are destroying the human capital of Ukraine, and, consequently, the basis for sustainable development, "the message says.

In addition, the population of Ukraine is one of those that are aging faster in Europe, in particular, more than a fifth of the population is over 60 years old. This is the reason for the increase in health care and pension costs, which puts a pressure on the state budget.

At the same time, the UN explains that population decline in itself is not a problem, but the level and quality of people's lives are important. Therefore, the Ukrainian government must ensure the development and effective use of the country's human capital, as well as social protection of people - through a politically and financially stable system. The organization places particular emphasis on health care, education, poverty reduction, decent work and environmental protection.
