The State Migration Service (SMS) said that Ukraine was preparing to legalize dual citizenship in order to fill the country with people. This was stated by Maksym Sokolyuk, the head of SMS, in an interview with European Pravda.
According to Sokolyuk, the first step has already been done - Presidential Bill No. 2590 is submitted to the Verkhovna Rada for consideration.
"This document is probably still to be discussed in the parliament, it can be changed. It is possible that there will be additional projects on this issue. But the vector of changes is set by the president," he said.
Also, according to the head of the service, the purpose of this initiative is the need for "interpenetration with people for the development of our country".
"It is now being determined how the new procedure will be drawn up, but something is clear. The constitutional rule on 'single citizenship' will remain: it means that we will continue to perceive people as citizens of Ukraine, even though they also have a passport of another state. The change will be that we are not going to require renunciation of nationality in order to obtain a Ukrainian passport," Sokolyuk said.
He stressed that there would be some restrictions on migrant risk countries, to which the aggressor state belongs.
"Dual citizenship is a kind of immigration program to Ukraine. We are losing population, we have lost a lot of economic migrants. Therefore, we have to offer certain categories of migrants: 'Come to Ukraine' ... But the slogans 'Come!' are not enough. We need an economic program that would encourage them to do it," the head of SMS stated.
As we reported earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia claims that over 160 thousand Ukrainians residing in Lugansk and Donetsk regions were eager to obtain Russian citizenship since April this year. The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation informed.
To note, Ukraine does not recognize Russian passports that were illegally issued to residents in the occupied regions.
