The telephone conversation of Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba with Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa Naledi Pandor marked the resumption of contacts between the foreign ministries of the two countries. The last dialogue between the heads of diplomacy of Ukraine and South Africa took place in 1998, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reports.

"By resuming dialogue with South Africa after a break of 23 years, we are creating additional opportunities for our companies, in particular in the fields of agriculture and food security, energy, shipbuilding, tourism," Kuleba said.

The Minister reminded that the strategy of Ukraine's foreign policy pays special attention to the development of relations with the countries of the African continent.

As it was reported earlier, protests began in South Africa in July when former President Jacob Zuma began serving a prison term.

Zuma has held the post of President of South Africa since 2009 and in early 2018 was forced to resign due to allegations of corruption.

South Africa's Constitutional Court has sentenced Zuma to 15 months in prison for refusing to testify as part of an investigation into corruption during his time in power.
