Foreign Ministry of Ukraine hopes that new Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejcinovic Buric will be able to restore the authority of the CoE as the ministry reported.
Particularly, the Foreign Ministry noted that Pejcinovic Buric assumes the office when the Council of Europe experiences one of the most serious crises in its history.
“This crisis is caused by systematic problems, which have begun in 90-s and the full defamation of one of the most important bodies of the Council of Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly, became the high point of them. With a decision on the return of Russia to PACE in full, the Council of Europe lost its authority and ability to efficiently protect the supremacy of law, human rights and democracy in all states-members,” the ministry said.
The commentary underlines that Ukraine will follow closely the actions of new Secretary-General of the Council of Europe.
“We expect particular steps from the Secretary-General for provision of Russia’s fulfillment of the demands, which stated in the decision of the Council of Europe on the stop of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, including release of illegally captured Ukrainian sailors, Ukrainian political prisoners, illegally kept in occupied Crimea and territory of Russia, stop of systematic persecutions of the Crimean Tatars and lifting of ban of Mejlis work on the peninsula,” the document says.
Besides, the Foreign Ministry offers the CoE Secretary-General to develop a new strategy of efficient management of human, financial and administrative resources of the Council of Europe, which will allow to get rid of wastage and provide efficient functioning of its constitutional mechanisms.
“We urge for constructive cooperation and interaction of Secretary-General with Committee of he Ministers of the Council of Europe and its chairmanship, which provides the political ruling of the organization. In such understanding, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine is ready to cooperate with new Secretary-General in the creation of the conditions to make the Council of Europe to get the chance for the restoration of the authority,” the ministry noted.
