The SBU, Ukraine's State Security Service, denied that the government began an investigation into the issuance of Hungarian passports in Zakarpattia, the westernmost region of the country. Olena Hitlyanska, the press secretary of the SBU reported this as quoted by LIGA.net.
'Currently, the Service has not been investigating the issuance of Hungarian citizenship in Berehove, Zakarpattia region', she said.
Thus, the official retracted the earlier statement by Yuriy Lutsenko, Prosecutor General of Ukraine, who said that the SBU would probe into the issuance of Hungarian passports.
According to Lutsenko, the situation concerning the dual citizenship is unequivocal: one has to bear responsibility for such crime. The General Prosecutor mentioned Andriy Artemenko, as an example, who as deprived of the Ukrainian citizenship after it was determined that he had a second passport.
“If within the investigation of SBU such cases will be defined concerning other individuals – governors, mayors, ministers, pensioners, military, the action is the same: to deprive of the Ukrainian citizenship,” Lutsenko stated.
Earlier, a video of issuance of Hungarian passports to Ukrainians was published.
Earlier, Ukrinfrom published a video where a few Ukrainians were receiving Hungarian passports and owe allegiance to Hungary in the Consulate in Berehove. The Hungarian diplomat recommended not to inform the Ukrainian authorities about receiving the new documents.
