Ukraine could cancel military draft in 2023, - official

The Ukrainian Parliament could cancel the mandatory military draft since 2023. The decision could be made within the military reform that is related to Ukraine's NATO membership plan.

Oleksandr Korniyenko, the head of the Servant of the People party reported that in his interview with UNN news agency. 

According to the official, when the bill on national resistance is passed, the military strategy will gradually be implemented in Ukraine, resulting in the switch from mandatory draft to the service in military reserve.

"Besides, military comissariat will be reformed, too. All these reforms are anticipated because they are related to the NATO membership. The military reform will carry on on the constant basis", Korniyenko said.

Earlier, Ukrainian lawmakers passed the law 5557. It aims to create the new system of national resistance to agressor country.

The bill offers to involve large groups of population into territorial defense in the occupied territories and/or resistance movement in the occupied or captured territories and preparation of Ukrainian citizens to fulfilling specific tasks in terms of defense and security.

The funding of national resistance will be provided by the state budget, local budgets and other sources that are not prohibited by the law.

Territorial defense is based on principles of territorial belonging, free will, involvement of wide strata of Ukrainian population, initiative and high level of readiness to fulfill the assigned tasks. It comprises of the military, civilian and combined military-civilian components.
