Ukraine and Turkey step up to protect Crimean Tatars

President Petro Poroshenko is in Turkey with the official visit

The Head of the Ukrainian state came to Turkey on Wednesday to meet with the country’s top-rank officials; in particular, Poroshenko is to negotiate with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayip Edrogan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Speaker of the Grand National Assembly Ismail Kahraman. Poroshenko also plans to meet with Ukrainian diaspora and take part in the meeting of Ukraine-Turkey Strategic Council, his Press Secretary Svyatoslav Tseholko tweeted.

The Ukrainian leader urged the Turkish Parliament to recognize the 1944 deportation of Crimean Tatars as genocide. The sides also agreed on joint steps to protect the Crimean Tatar people in the Russian-occupied Crimea.
