US President Donald Trump and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held their first meeting on Monday, after which they promised to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, Russian BBC writes.
At the joint press conference that had a fairly peaceful air, they repeatedly stressed that the two countries had common interests and goals.
Trump promised to further cooperate with Canada in achieving these goals. Trudeau mentioned special relations that bind the countries, and the profound mutual respect between them. At the same time he noted that relations between neighbors could be quite complicated.
Trade and migration problem were the main topics of two leaders’ meeting.
Their responses to journalists' questions also showed differences in political views. Trump was defending his policy aimed at limiting unwanted migration, claiming once again that he won’t be letting in “wrong” people.
Canadian leader said he had a fruitful discussion on immigration with his American counterpart.
However, Canada will continue its policy of openness towards refugees in compliance with all measures to ensure its security, Tudeau said.
There was a time when both countries held different positions concerning various problems. But Canadians would not understand it if he began to lecture the president of a big country on how it should behave and cope with internal problems in their country, Trudeau added.
Upon arrival to the White House Trudeau presented a personal gift to Donald Trump - a photo of a young Trump with his father, who was the former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
Earlier it was reported that Putin-Trump meeting to possibly take place before July, according to Kremlin. US and Russian Presidents intend to mend relations of the countries that worsened after Crimea annexation.
