President of the United States Donald Trump stated that Germany allegedly "owed" USA 375 billion dollars in the framework of participation in NATO. This happened during a meeting between Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, writes Times.

The publication refers to sources in the German government, which confirmed this information, calling the fact of billing "outrageous." They also reported that the American president personally handed over the document to Chancellor during her visit to Washington.

"The idea of such demands is to intimidate another country, but the Chancellor took them calmly and will not respond to these provocations," the unnamed German official said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germany must fulfill its obligations to NATO and make a greater contribution to the Alliance's defense budget.

As reported, NATO countries are recommended to contribute to the defense budget of the Alliance in the amount of 2% of GDP.
