According to the decree of President of the United States Donald Trump about imposing sanctions against anyone who interferes in the US elections, Russia and other countries will immediately face consequences when trying to intervene, US State Department Secretary Mike Pompeo said.

"If Russia or any other foreign state intervenes in the American elections, it will face rapid and severe consequences," Pompeo said.

"Foreign malicious actors have used information technology and social media to open new fronts in their efforts to undermine our democracy and our core institutions. These actors want to turn Americans against one another and convince us that our institutions, our ideals, are defective. But we are resolved to defeat these efforts and make clear that those who interfere with our liberties will pay a price", said Pompeo.

He stressed that in the past few years, "Russia has been particularly aggressive in using its cyberpotential, misinformation ... in order to achieve destabilization in America."

Earlier Trump signed a decree, which provides for the imposition of sanctions against foreigners who are trying to intervene in the elections in the United States.

Trump's national security advisor, John Bolton, in turn, explained that these sanctions would include freezing assets, restricting access to US financial markets and banning investments in companies involved in interference in US elections.
