US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Germany was under complete control of Russia because of Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Trump said this during power breakfast with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels before the summit, as CNN agency reports.
"Germany is a captive of Russia. It's very inappropriate," Trump said.
Trump noted that the United States is expected to "defend them against Russia," when Germany is making "billions of dollars" in energy payments to Moscow. "I think it's something that NATO has to look at," Trump said.
Stoltenberg tried to defend, saying that while there may be differences of opinion within the alliance, "we are stronger together than apart."
Trump retorted by again asking how the NATO alliance could be stronger when Germany is "making Russia richer."
"Germany as far as I understand is captive to Russia," Trump repeated again.
As it was reported earlier, even if the U.S. imposes sanctions, Russia can fund the construction of Nord Stream 2, as Paul Corcoran, the Finance Director of Nord Steam 2, said in the interview. Gazprom is not commenting on the statement.

Earlier, Corcoran also stated that the gas pipeline might be constructed bypassing Denmark if it refuses to give permission for the construction.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in his speech at the European Parliament said that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was a political project and would increase the EU's dependence on Russia.
