U.S. President Donald Trump said that former U.S. leader Barack Obama could stop the annexation of Crimea, but did not. Trump said this during a press conference following the results of the G7 summit in Biarritz, Ukrinform reports.

“Obama was outwitted. Crimea was annexed during his presidency. If this happened during my power, I would say: “Sorry, friends, I made a mistake!” President Obama helped Ukraine, and Crimea was annexed under him,” Trump said.

Trump believes that Obama could stop the annexation of Crimea with the right actions, but this has not happened. Obama was unhappy with the development of events, so after the annexation, he removed Russia from the G8.

The American leader also adds that Crimea is an important strategic territory, it is there that Russia holds its powerful submarines.

Earlier, President Trump supported the return of Russia to the G7 on the eve of the G7 summit in French Biarritz.

President of Ukraine Zelensky believes that until the Russian Federation returns Crimea and ceases hostilities in Donbas, there can be no talks of its returning to the ranks of the G7 countries.

Representatives of Germany, Britain, Canada, and the EU also do not support the idea of Russia returning to the G7.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that Russia could be invited to participate in the next G7 summit, but only as a guest.

Russia was expelled from the G8 after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
