US President Donald Trump nominated retired Lieutenant General Keith Dayton for the post of U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. The press service of the White House reported that.

"Keith Dayton from Washington will be the United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine," the statement said.

Dayton is now the director of the George Marshall Center in Germany. He is also a senior US defense adviser in Ukraine.

Earlier, Keith Dayton served as a military attaché at the embassy in Russia.

Dayton received a bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, as well as a master's degree from the University of Southern California in collaboration with the US Army Institute in Garmisch, Germany.

He received numerous awards for his military service, including these from the State Department and the governments of Canada, Germany and Austria.

Dayton speaks Russian and German.
