Trump: It's time for U.S. to recognize Israel's sovereignty over Golan Heights

Knesset recognized the country's authority over this strategically important area in 1981, but the UN did not endorse this decision

The time has come for the U.S. government to recognize the sovereignty of Israel over the Golan Heights. President Donald Trump wrote that on Twitter

'After 52 years, it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!', his tweet reads.

The Golan Heights are a disputed area, which Israel and Syria consider to be their territory. Before 1967, they were considered part of Syria, bit Israeli army took most of that territory during the Six-Day War in June 1967. A DMZ was set to divide the conflicting sides in this area.

Knesset recognized the country's authority over this strategically important area in 1981, but the UN did not endorse this decision.

In May 2018, the U.S. moved the Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Thus, the White House recognized Jerusalem the capital city of Israel.
