The United States will send a limited number of troops to Saudi Arabia to carry out defense functions. This decision was approved by US President Donald Trump after a number of oil facilities in the kingdom were attacked, The Voice of America reported.

“US President Donald Trump has approved the dispatch of US troops to strengthen Saudi security,” the report said.

According to the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford, the quantity of the American military contingent will not reach even a thousand people.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper assures this is the first step, and he is not ruling out additional moves down the road. He said it is a response to requests from Saudi Arabia and the UAE to help improve their air and missile defenses.

Esper and Dunford reported that details of the deployments will be determined over the coming days.

Saudi and US officials have said that evidence shows Iranian involvement in last weekend's attacks on Saudi oil facilities - an allegation Tehran denies.

Yemen's Houthi rebels, who have been locked in a war with a Saudi-UAE-led coalition since 2015, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

A few days ago, Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, described the attack on Saudi oil facilities as an "act of war." After meeting Saudi Crown Prince, Pompeo had in a tweet said that the US stands with Saudi Arabia and supports its right to defend itself.
