12 people were killed as a result of the truck crashing into the crowd at a Christmas market on Breitscheidplatz in the center of Berlin, says the message of Berlin police published in Twitter.
Previously it was reported about nine killed people.
48 people injured due to the incident are in the hospitals of the city, according to recent data.
Breitscheidplatz is located on Kurfürstendamm street, and there is a Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on the square. The Berlin police asked residents not to spread rumors and not to leave their homes due to the incident.
The driver of the tractor-trailer truck that hit the crowd was a refugee from Pakistan, who came to Germany on February 16, 2016, according to sources of the Die Welt newspaper.
It is unknown if the driver was using his real name, reported Bild, citing law enforcement sources. Therefore, his identity at the moment cannot be confirmed. When a man came to Germany, he was registered as Pakistani or Afghan, according to the daily.
The fact that the driver is a refugee is also reported by Tagesspiel daily, it is also noted that he could have stolen the truck.
The truck drove the market territory about 80 meters. Later the police reported that the tractor had Polish numbers, its driver tried to flee the scene and was arrested some time later. The passenger who was in the cabin of the truck died instantly.
The car belongs to the Polish transport company from Gdansk, said the head of the company Ariel Zhuravsky on air of TVN24. According to the owner of the company it had to be his cousin who has 15 years of driving experience driving the car. Zhuravsky also said that he could not reach his cousin from 16:00 on Monday, December 19. He suggested that the car could have been stolen.
