The leaders of the U.S. Democratic Party called Donald Trump for cancelling the scheduled Summit with Russia’s President Putin. They regard such meeting “a betrayal of democracy”, in particular after the U.S. Justice Department pressed charges against 12 Russian intelligence agents concerning the interference in the elections, as CNN reports.
"President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russia takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections. Glad-handing with Vladimir Putin on the heels of these indictments would be an insult to our democracy," Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader, said.
Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House, stressed that Russians should be treated more sever due to the current conditions.
“The stakes for the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting could not be higher. President Trump must demand and secure a real, concrete and comprehensive agreement that the Russians will cease their ongoing attacks on our democracy. Failure to stand up to Putin would constitute a profound betrayal of the Constitution and our democracy," she said.
Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, stated that he was concerned with this Trump-Putin meeting. Senator Tammy Duckworth, the representative of Illinois Democrats, stated that the U.S. had to apply the force of the American sanctions against Russia and impose them on broader sectors of the Russian economy.
"Donald Trump must immediately cancel his planned summit with Vladimir Putin until Russia demonstrates its willingness to come back into the community of nations that respect the rule of law, legal norms and democratic institutions,” Duckworth said.
