Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during the meeting with Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov in Manila asked for the details about the Moscow’s response measures to the newly adopted by the US sanctions, as Lavrov told Radio Svoboda after the meeting.
In particular, he emphasized having had a long meeting with the US Secretary of State, who was interested in the details of the decisions, which, as Lavrov phrased it, “had to be made in response to the adopted by the US Congress law on anti-Russian sanctions”.
“The heads of foreign offices of the US and Russia agreed to keep contact on the level of their deputies: Riabkov – Shannon,” the media notes.
We will add that Tillerson and Lavrov met in Manila during a regional ASEAN meeting. This is the first time they met after US president Donald Trump signed the law on new sanctions against Moscow.
It is also worth mentioning, that Tillerson refused to talk to the press after the meeting. He left right after the negotiations ended.
As it was reported earlier, the sanctions law includes both individual and sectorial sanctions against Russia, Iran, North Korea, and enshrines the already existing restrictions. It also deprives the US president of the right to cancel the sanctions without the approval from the Congress. Russia responded with reducing the diplomatic presence of the US in their country.
