The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia stated that the news on discussions about a possible spy swap with former U.S. marine Paul Whelan is fake, reports Reuters 

Earlier, Russia’s Federal Security Service reported that the U.S. citizen Paul Whelan was arrested in Moscow on suspicion of spying.   

The service reported that the American was detained “during holding espionage action.”

"The investigation department of the Federal Security Service of Russia initiated a criminal case against a US citizen under Article 276 (espionage) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation," reads the message.   

At the same time, they didn’t specify any details.
