The United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated on the termination of the American-Iran Treaty of Amity, economic relations and consular rights, concluded in 1955. He claimed this October 3, The Hill reports.

“I’m announcing that the United States is terminating the 1955 Treaty of Amity with Iran,” Pompeo said at a press briefing. This is a decision frankly that is 39 years overdue,’ he claimed.

The 1955 treaty enshrined the legal principle of the most favoured nation in respect of individuals and legal entities on both sides.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the UN International Court of Justice issued a preliminary ruling on Iran’s claim against the United States, according to which the USA must withdraw from the sanctions against Iran's humanitarian aid and goods related to civil aviation.

Reportedly, the US to introduce new sanctions against Iran on November 4. It was also mentioned that the USA seeks the possibility to negotiate about the conclusion of a treaty with Iran, which to include the Tehran’s program on the development of ballistic missiles, as well as its behavior in the region.

In May, the United States President Donald Trump officially declared the US exit from the nuclear agreement with Iran.
