President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky accepted the resignation of Igor Sopel, chairman of the Ternopil Regional State Administration, who decided to quit the office after a panic in the region due to the arival of evacuees from Wuhan. This was reported on the website of the President's Office.
"Due to the situation that occurred in Ternopil region due to the evacuation of citizens of Ukraine from China, and the unsatisfactory work of the regional state administration to inform the public about epidemiological safety, the President of Ukraine accepted a statement by Igor Sopel on his resignation," the statement said.
As reported, in several regions of Ukraine, panic due to arival of evacuees from Wuhan arose - people blocked roads to sanatoriums so as not to allow those returned.
In particular, in the Ternopil region, the first deputy chairman of the regional council Vasyl Derevlyany called the decision of the authorities on the deployment of Ukrainians in the region a genocide.
On February 19, at the entrance to the Medobory sanatorium, where Ukrainians evacuated from China could be brought in, residents held a prayer service against such accommodation.
We recall, on February 20, a plane with Ukrainians evacuated from Wuhan returned to Ukraine. It was noted that healthy persons were on board, they did not have symptoms of coronavirus disease. The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that Ukrainians will be placed in the medical center of the National Guard in the Poltava region. In this regard, protests against the placement of Ukrainians from Wuhan began in the Poltava region.
