Foreign Minister of Hungary Peter Szijarto asked OSCE Head Gent Cakaj to send a mission to Ukraine's westernmost region of Zakarpattya so as to look into the violations of rights of Hungarian community. Szijarto reported that on his Facebook page.
"After the NATO meeting, I talked with my friend Gent Cakaj on the phone (Albanian Foreign Minister; the country now also leads the way in the OSCE, - 112 International). I asked him for the OSCE SMM in Ukraine to come to Zakarpattya and look into yesterday's insults against the Hungarian community", said the head of Hungarian diplomatic corps.
According to him, Cakaj took steps to inform the OSCE observers about what happened, and the observers will contact Hungarians resident in that area.
In late November, Ivan Chubirko, MP of Zakarpattya branch of Opposition Platform - For Life claimed that the SBU, the state security service ran a check at the place of Vasyl Brenzovych, the leader of Hungarian society in that region. On December 1, it became known that the SBU operatives checked information about possible signs of illegal activity among the MPs of local rural council. Some of these people performed Hungarian national anthem while making their oath.
Later, a video appeared on the Web; a man wearing the mask with red and black banner (the widely known symbol of Ukrainian nationalists, - 112 International) and symbols of the Right Sector organization threatened Hungarian Ukrainians and their children. The police opened criminal proceeding on that fact. Commenting on that video, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov claimed that the Ukrainian state would be harshly prosecuting the Nazis and extremists who threaten Ukrainian citizens, while being disguised as patriots.
