The wife and daughter of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko will visit him at a pre-trial detention facility in Russia, where he is illegally held on charges of espionage. According to his lawyer Mark Feygin, the meeting is slated for this week.
‘Anzhelika and Yulia Sushchenko will meet with my defendant in the next week,’ Feygin said. He added that could be their last meeting during the pre-trial investigation period.
‘When the trial begins, the procedure of organization of such visits will get more complicated; it’s going to be a much longer bureaucratic process now. Now, a permission from Moscow city court will be necessary. Even a Ukrainian consul will face exactly the same difficulties when requesting the right for such visit,’ he said.
Earlier it was reported that the Moscow City Court extended the arrest of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko for another two months - until January 13, 2018. The hearing on the case, like all the previous ones, was held in closed session. Ukrainian journalists and the consul of Ukraine were allowed to enter the courtroom only during announcing of the verdict.
Sushchenko was detained at the end of September 2016 in Moscow, and was accused by the FSB of espionage. For this, he faces 20 years imprisonment. Now Roman and his lawyer get acquainted with the case materials.
