On Monday, the NATO Council will convene for an extraordinary meeting in view of the escalating situation in Iraq. The decision was made by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Interfax reports, citing NATO official in Brussels.
"The North Atlantic Council will examine the situation in the region (in the Middle East – ed.) on Monday, January 6, 2020," a NATO official said.
According to him, Stoltenberg’s decision to hold a meeting of the Council was made after consulting with allies.
Ambassadors of NATO's member countries will attend the meeting devoted to the situation in the Middle East.
As we reported earlier, an explosion occurred in the green zone of Baghdad at the United States Embassy. Reuters informed about it.
According to the American newspaper, a rocket fell near the building of the U.S. Embassy in the diplomatic area of the Iraqi capital. Now all the entrances to the US diplomatic mission are closed.
It is still unknown where and by whom this rocket was launched. There is no information on victims of a missile strike.
