Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier was elected the new President of Germany. It is reported by DW.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier was the only candidate of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union in Germany, as well as the Social Democratic Party, and gained an absolute majority of votes of the representatives of the Federal Assembly in the first round. In particular, 931 elector of Bundestag and the Land parliaments delegates voted in favor of Steinmeier, so with the necessary 631 votes he won in the first round.
It is noted that the winning candidate becomes the president after he agrees with the results of voting in the Federal Assembly. The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for 19 March. Steinmeier will replace 77-year-old Joachim Gauck on the post.
