U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that American lawmakers would establish an independent commission to review the “facts and causes” related to the U.S. Capitol that took place on January 6, Reuters reports.
According to the House Speaker, the commission would be modeled on a similar one convened after the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on New York and the Pentagon.
“The panel will also look at the facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other federal, state, and local law enforcement,” said Pelosi.
As we reported earlier, the U.S. Senate acquitted ex-President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial.
The final vote was 57 guilty to 43 not guilty, short of the 67 guilty votes needed to convict.
The article of impeachment addressed Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results (including his false claims of election fraud and his efforts to pressure election officials in Georgia) and alleged incitement of the storming of the Capitol.
