Speaker of Ukrainian Parliament signs Electoral Code

Andriy Parubiy, the head of the Ukrainian Parliament, has signed the Electoral Code. He left the respective post on his Twitter account.

The Speaker also embedded the photo of the document that included 566 pages. It rules that the parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be held by the open party lists.

After 16 failed attempts, the Verkhovna Rada finally passed the new Electoral Code; 230 MPs voted for the document, with 226 votes necessary to pass. The Code lets the voters influence the place of candidates in the party lists, keeping the electoral threshold on the level of five percent.  

According to Article 77 of Ukraine’s Constitution, regular elections to the Verkhovna Rada are held in October at the end of the fifth year of the powers of parliament; that is, the next election is supposed to take place in October 2023.
