Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced that within the limits of the Catalan autonomy, the government and parliament of the region will be dissolved. Their powers will be transferred to the central authorities. The prime minister made a corresponding statement after today's cabinet meeting, El Pais reports.

According to the report, the Spanish government wants to introduce such measures within the framework of Article 155 of the Constitution, which allows to suspend autonomy in cases when regional authorities violate the law and threaten the interests of the whole country.

To restore order in Catalonia, authorities will hold elections to parliament, which will then approve the new government.

It is expected that the request of the Government to limit the powers of the Catalan authorities will be supported by the Senate of Spain on October 27 and will enter into force the next day.

We recall that on October 1, 2017 in Catalonia, a referendum on the independence of the region was held. According to the results, 90.18% voted for independence with 43% turnout.
