Attorney General of Spain Jose Manuel Maza claimed about the opening of the criminal proceedings against the politicians who are responsible for the proclamation of the independence of Catalonia as El Pais reported.

‘Attorney General Jose Manuel Maza claimed about the file of two legal lawsuits on the rebellion and embezzlement of the public funds against the politicians who are responsible for the proclamation of the independence of Catalonia’, the message said.

The attorney demanded from the Catalonian leaders to immediately come forwards to the investigative bodies or they will be arrested. It is reported that the criminal proceedings will concern 20 persons, including former Head of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont.

As it is reported, Puigdemont took off to Brussels where he was promised to be provided with the political asylum.

The referendum on the independence took place in Catalonia on October 1. According to the results, 90.18% voted for independence with 43% turnout.

The Government of Catalonian proclaimed the independence on October 27. The Spanish government reacted using Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, which allows to dismiss the heads of Catalonia and introduce direct governing in the region by Madrid.
