According to Hancock, the situation would improve in a few months when the mass vaccination of the population would take place.
"It (the new strain) is an enormous challenge, until we can get the vaccine rolled out to protect people. This is what we face over the next couple of months," the statement said.
The official also stated that the British government had to act "quickly and decisively" in order to deal with the issue.
Along with the UK, the same mutation of the Covid-19 virus has also been detected in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Australia.
Large parts of south-east England have imposed stricter level of restrictions in a bid to curb the rapidly spreading virus.
