Pop musician Alessandro Safina canceled concerts in the occupied Crimea. He posted this at Facebook.
“I would like to point out that I have never in my long artistic career found myself in such a delicate situation and, despite being aware of and involved in how much pain and discomfort this situation has brought to so many people, as an artist I would like to always feel free to express myself, no holds barred”, he wrote.
Since 2011, the singer held a series of concerts in Ukraine’s biggest cities. In early 2015, his Ukrainian promoter sent him a message, notifying Safina of the dates and places of the events. Besides, his Crimean promoter invited him to hold concerts in Simferopol and Sevastopol in Crimea – February 21 and 23, respectively.
According to Safina, he accepted. “Recently, however, the Ukrainian authorities sanctioned a restriction according to which anyone who enters the Crimea region will be considered undesirable in Ukraine. That being the case, it was my duty to bring this matter to the attention of the promoter from Crimea proposing my commitment to reschedule these two concerts as soon as the conflicts are resolved, wishing, moreover, that this happens as quickly as possible, not so much for me and for my concerts but for reasons far more important and deep that have to do with the suffering and the lives of so many people”, Safina’s Facebook post went on.
According to the tenor, he was ready to compensate for losses related to publicity and concert organization, which already were disbursed.
The promoter from Crimea, however, turned down this offer, threatening Safina with scandals and retaliatory measures.
“At this point, after this person’s unreasonable and selfish behavior because of which I was so seriously compromised through acts of misinformation and scandal threats held only with great malice trying to give this sequence of events political undertones, I decided to cut all ties with her from now on and to cancel these two concerts for good. Moreover, up until now this promoter had neither signed any contract for the two concerts nor sent an advance payment guarantee even though I have persistently asked for them for months through my management”, the singer wrote.
The Italian concluded by reiterating that he has always been an artist who abstains from any political involvement, the one who always respected other people’s feelings “while always being in favor of the common good and common peace”.
Safina planned to hold the concerts in the occupied Crimea, and then continue with his tour in the mainland Ukraine. In March, he was about to come to Lviv (western Ukraine), Kyiv, Odesa (southern Ukraine), Zaporizhya (southeastern Ukraine) and Kharkiv (eastern Ukraine).
Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture said in case Safina performs in the illegally annexed Crimea, the agency will turn to the SBU, Ukraine’s Security Service, and cancel all his further performances in Ukraine.
