Georgia's former president Mikheil Saakashvili was arrested on Friday hours after announcing he was back in the country. His arrest was announced by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

"Our law enforcement agencies had information in advance about his movement - from Ukraine to Georgia," the prime minister said.

The prime minister added that the ex-president had already been taken to the penitentiary.

Earlier, Saakashvili reported that he intends to come to the motherland for upcoming elections to the bodies of local self-government on October 2.

Today, in the morning, the Georgian ex-president wrote on Facebook that he has crossed the border of Georgia.

However, it is not the first time, when he promises the supporters to come to Georgia. The current authorities of Georgia warn the politician about the arrest in case of his arrival.

Saakashvili was the president of Georgia for two terms. In 2013, when his party lost, and his second term finished, Saakashvili left the country and never returned. He lived in Europe, the US, and Ukraine.

As of now, Saakashvili does not have the citizenship of Georgia as he was deprived of it after ge did not process the dual citizenship during the obtaining of Ukrainian citizenship.
