"As a result of a sudden mortar shelling of ISIS militants, Lieutenant-General Valeriy Asapov was fatally wounded by a mine explosion," the agency cites Russian Defense Ministry.
Asapov was the eldest in a group of Russian military advisers and was at the command post of Syrian troops during a military operation near the town of Dair-ez-Zor.
In 2016, Ukrainian intelligence called Asapov one of the leaders of the Russian military in eastern Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied military presence in the territories controlled by the separatists of Donbas.
As it was reported earlier Ukraine’s Military Prosecutor’s Office was issued a suspect notice to Russian general Aleksey Zavizyon involved in death of 3 thousand Ukrainian soldiers. This was reported by the press service of the Prosecutor’s Office.
“Zavizyon is reasonably suspected in giving orders to shell ATO positions and attack Ukraine’s Armed Forces soldiers and law enforcers, serving as a commander of the so-called DNR people’s militia in the period from February to July of 2015 in conspiracy with other authorities and officials of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” the message says.
